I had a similar-ish incident a few years back where I was unknowingly uninsured for a fortnight. I went into the police station for my producer and expained what had happened. They could see that I was insured before, and that I was insured 'now' and that it wasn't my fault. All my other documents were correct and that was that, they let me go.

They 'may' be more understanding than you expect.
