Welding thin sheet is harder than thick sheet, I would concentrate on MIG only, as it's about the best all rounder.
Listen for the fried bacon sound, and learn how to interpret welds, put the feed up and see the difference, put down see the difference, basically experiment, can't really go wrong on scrap pieces.
Work prep as said is the key, can't weld rust, mma/arc has a very high ocv so is a lot fiercer than mig, but good on cast with cast rods, this is what I used to weld my std cossie crank pulley to get trigger wheel on there(after machining).

do you want to come and do some welding for me then if the thicker stuff is easy??
how about you weld this back on for me!!! all positional and you will have to prep it as its getting x rayed when your done should be a walk in the park if you can weld lol.
