The water pump issue is over-exaggerated, and seems to only affect the earlier cars. I can only presume that the later plastic impellers were made of tougher stuff..

The 'dreaded tick' is common on V6 Mondeos. If it's the head gasket then it won't cause any harm in the short term, but it could render the block and head scrap if it's neglected. But mine had the 'tick', so when I broke it I took the heads off to check, and they were fine, so the tick was something else, most likely the exhaust manifold gasket.
