I have replaced wheel bearings and cannot get any noticeable play when shaking down the front wheels. I drive 2 other cars with identical brake systems and neither of them do this.

This car has had the problem since we brought it over.

Any ideas?

Oh yeah, and thanks for a great resource!!! Not much information available on this side of the pond. I have been working on these things since 1997 and was quite happy to recently find this place!!
you are describing "Pad knock off " ,this generally occurs when the flex in the upright/bearing etc..pushes the pistons back in the caliper , i take it you aren't using a floating brake disc/bell combination as this normally reduces what you describe .
