They're a nightmare to remove in one piece, so I don't envy your task. I found the best way was to just keep wiggling, while applying as much upwards pressure as possible. Took bloody ages.

Drilling does seem to be the best option to avoid having to get the box out. I presume the car won't run properly without one?
