Doug - The emissions test goes on wether the vehicle OR engine is older (for engine transplants).
For example, you put a 1992 Cosworth 4x4 engine into a 2007 Focus shell then the emissions test will be for the age of the engine and not the vehicle.
Grace if you read the manual it stipulates was the vehicle 1st used on or before ( not engine ) for emission testing ,
