All down to mileage really, if on a bufty car most likely outlast the car, but one that is being used will suffer much more quickly, I do at least 18,000-20,000 miles a year and would expect at least 10 years.
If the fins become all squashed they can be straightened with a fin rake, pressure washers are ace for flattening the fins.
