When Labour is in power, stock markets fall

Former Warburgs director John Littlewood is pamphleteering for the Right-leaning Centre for Policy Studies. His research shows the London stock market has fallen 26% in real terms since Labour came into power in 1997 when adjusted for the rate of inflation.
This, he says, should come as no surprise. Every Labour government since the war has overseen a fall in the stock market during their time in power: down 7.5% under Clem Attlee, 13% in Harold Wilson's first administration and 11.5% under Labour between 1974-79. Needless to say, Littlewood directs us to compare this with the Conservative governments of 1951 to 1964 when the stock market rose by 75% and, of course, under the administration of the Blessed Margaret and then John Major, the markets between 1979 and 1997 soared 166%.
