Default 1.8 16v zetec

Hi, the car in question in a escort gti on a r plate. 91 k with full history.

Only had it a week or so and it seemed to be hesitant at motorway speeds. It has what looks like K&N induction kit and a cat back exhaust.

Anyway, I set about to find the cause..

Removed plugs and seemed fine, removed leads and found a broken one at the ignition coil end. Replaced plugs and leads with new set. Also put standard airbox back on to reduce the noise.

Went for a drive and it was a bag of sh**e.

It idles ok, About 1k cold and im guessing 800 / 900 warm..
but it just would not let you rev it.

So again, set about taking a look.. I checked the AFM. This is what confuses me as people say the car will go well, if not better with it unplugged. Well, with the engine idleing i unplugged it and it cut out. I could not get the engine to run with it unplugged.
Is that right? I cleaned it anyway and refitted it.

I also took took off the tps. The car would start, if you tried to blip the throttle it would cut out. So i put that back on.

I also found a few connectors caked in copper slip.. One to the ignition pack / coil, the air inlet temp and the water temp sensor so I cleaned them off.

I also replaced the induction kit back on and looked at the lambda connection. The pins were white and looked like a bad connection so I put a bit of grease on them.

Took it for a drive and its much better. But its drinking the fuel like no ones business.. Any ideas? Im still wondering why it wouldnt run with the AFM unplugged ?

It also feels a bit slow, for 115 bhp (if it still has that) but bearing in mind my last cars have been a s2 rs turbo, subaru imprezza etc, I also have a gsx-r 1000 k7 so I might just be expecting too much. I do expect better fuel economy tho.
