Default Mechanical guru's opinions please

Canvasing opinions here guys,

A mate has a renault 19 (that's only the start of his problems though). On his way to work on Friday the cambelt snapped whilst doing about 50mph in top on the motorway, he was recovered to a local garage who have suggested fitting a new belt and trying to start it. The thing is, the lad is skint and can ill afford chucking a couple hundred at a gamble, the car a 1.4 8valve on an S plate so is worth 2 quid and will be scrapped if there has been any contact internally as a result of the belt letting go(no point throwing good money after bad).

In summary then.

Can anybody state with a degree of certain that there will have been some contact?

thanks guys
