With the money you will spend on parts to mod it, and insurance increase it would work out cheaper to change the car to a more powerful one.
Completely agree, go for the 1.8 or 2.0, they're both a good starting place.
You should be able to pick up the engine cheap enough, though the 2.0 comes with a superior gearbox IMHO.
