Anodising decreases surface area if anything.

Certainly that's the case with the aluminium I send for anodising every day, as layers are stripped before the new protective layer is added. Although the process maybe different for items like you're talking about ^^^

Also, whilst it "toughens" the metal, anodised stuff scratches SO easily.
