With a non running engine and with contact on ground the thin wire, the light should go on brightly, you donīt have to disconnect the wire from the alternator, just do not run the engine while you are doing this.
If the light comes on, the bulb and wiring are ok so the alternator must be broken, possibly brushes or rectifier.
