Knock can be caused by a lot of things, most common being:
Bad Fuel
Wrong plug grade
incorrect mixture (lean or rich)
head gasket failing
valve guides failing
piston rings worn


Incorrect detection can be caused by lost of things too, such as:
loose engine parts
worn valve train
bore wear
bearing wear
