Correct the gauge will need to be earthed as you now have it is a plastic hose, so cannot earth through it, however I'm guessting you have your earth connection on the nut part of the sensor at the top. I think if you had it on the thread part which sits inside the hole it would work. IMO if it was me I would try and get the other one drilled out and the thread retapped.
