Well, back in the day....

When I raced bikes, we used to wire the alternator field through the neutral switch in the transmisison. The bike would increase voltage when checked at tech with the trans in neutral, but once in the race, no power to the field and therefore no alternator drag.

The engine didn't MAKE any more power, but something like 3hp was gained at the wheel because the parasitic losses were less.
