Default Misfire when hot - eletronic ignition?

Hello - hope someone can hep or let me know their opinion here. I have a sierra stock car which uses a 1.6 pinto. It starts OK and sounds fine when parked even when hot but once I'm racing after it gets hot it starts dying under load - if I back off the throttle or dip the clutch (then wait for it to pick up) its OK for a few seconds and then splutters again.

I got the car earlier this year and it was supposedly running fine before. Have tried tweaking the timing slightly but doesn't seem to help (so its back where it was).

Am now thinking its the coil but am up for suggestions.
Also - is it worth getting electronic ignition (has got standard points distributor at the mo)? My reservation is that its got a non standard cam and carbs so don't know if the standard 1.6 ignition curve would cause problems at high revs and I don't have the knowledge to sort that. :-(

Thanks for any help.

Bob
