One thing to consider is that with DSLR, you'll need to be ready to spend some money on other bits. The kits mostly come with an 18-55 lens and I was amazed (being no more than a hobby photographer), now quickly I found the limits of that lens. The lens I want next is a 70-300 and entry level Canon 70-300 is around £400.

If you want to point/shoot, you may be better with a good digital compact, unless you are ready to spend a bit of money.
