On the blacktop engine in a standard installation, the alternator 'clashes' with the #1 runner. On a Focus around 6mm has to be removed (breaking into the runner) and even more to clear a Mondeo alternator (9/98).

It flows better (ref Ian Howell) but mainly at higher revs (shorter runners) so whether you'd get any benefit with the Ford management is debatable.
