I know its a different application... but my DC2 Integra TypeR was doing similar and I replaced the valve stem seals which cured the problem.
As well as giving it large into VTEC and then allowing it to come down on over-run and putting foot back down, I found that sitting on the spot revving to the high to mid rpm-range, letting it run down a couple of 1000 rpm and blipping the throttle was producing a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust.
