Bad plan - get him to prove that the money left his account - letter from his bank with details. Ur bank will then be able to trace it.

Ur bank should be very aware that they received a cheque from you (you did pay it in?) and then the fact it bounced, disapeared or whatever.

Should be easy enough to clear up
