It's not always bad business practice to let people use copies of programs, e.g. Microsoft has such a huge market share through so many home users using illegal copies, but if it helps them to become the market standard then businesses throw all the money they need at it, and home users follow suite eventually.

There will always be people who refuse to pay for anything, so they might as well be using your software instead of a competitors!

Games for example, get them hooked then they want to play online, suddenly their copy is no use so they go out and buy it
