As said valve clearances rarely get checked and do give a rattle and people putting 5-50 oil in doesn't help either, i.e. BMW. If it's a top end rattle it's less likely to be vanos related and it's easy to check where the noise is coming from, the vanos sounds more like popping/ball bearing noise.
