Before you start pulling it apart LOL, look at the simple things first then
work from there.
1) Check the water thermostat in the cylinder head. Buy a new kit and change it over. But test it in a pan of hot water first to make sure it opens up when the water is hot and that it closes when the water cools down.
2) Check that the fan switch is functioning as they are prone for failure.
3) Another thing to check is that the header tank is OK and not cracked, and that the cap seals properly. In the past my header tank split and hot water leaked everywhere, not what you need when you are driving along. My car now has an alloy one on the car. Plastic header tanks are still available from Ford if you need one.
4) If you don’t like the idea of your car sitting in traffic and waiting for the fan to come on then do what I did. Connect the fan to a manual switch inside the car so you can control when the fan comes on and goes off, but the car can still switch it on in case you forget. Only takes about an hour to fit.
