I don't make me lad(12) clear his room, as I think letting him see the difference between a pig sty and the rest of the house migh encourage him to want to be tidier, rather than being compelled to do it, and it works too.
If he hasn't put his trainers away I wait until he is sat down with laptop, watching tv whatever, the make him get up to do this, then when he's got comfy again make him get up each time do anything else he forgot, so he looks now at what he should be doing, as he's sick of getting up and down!!
