I can't believe that anyone would be fussed about a car being stolen back in 1991!!! That is 18 years ago!!!
I think too many people completely rely on the HPI check and either walk away from very good cars because of bad history or buy absolute wrecks because of good history.
One car that I bought a fews years had been stolen and recovered, however it was being stored at the time and so wasn't insured and so there was no record of it!!!
My sister had her Nova broken into many years ago, we found it at the end of the road as the thieving scum weren't able to break the steering lock. We had to replace the steering cowl and locks but again there was no record?
My current car was a category write off back in 2001. It unfortunately went head first into a hedge. As most cossie parts are difficult to source most are simply 'written off'
Since then it has been completely rebuilt and I believe looks better than most. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that an insurance company assesor looked at my car 8 years ago and thought 'Thats going to be difficult, lets just write it off and give the man some money and then sell the car for a good price'!
I suppose if I ever sell the car I will have to reduce the price but I think a genuine enthusiast will look at the car and realise what a great one it is.
I think there are alot worse things that happen to a car that the following owners never realise, such as shoddy repairs that do not involve an insurance company, track use etc.
Cheers
