erm no i wont be clutch!!! clutch slip and the revs would rise but youd accelerate slowly (or not at all depending how bad it is )

Sounds like youve got a sensor fault. could be HEGO, MAF, Throttle position etc etc.

Try disconnecting battery for 15 minutes to clear any codes as sometimes that can resolve it for a one off intermittant fault thats playing fun with the ECU.

If youve got a 99 onwards puma with digital dash then put your dash into diagnostic mode and read the fault codes to find out which sensor is playing up.
