Does anyone know if their are different size lower ball joints for any mk5/6 escort or escort van?

I brought some lower arms and fitted them but there is lots of play in the lower joint, It moves in the hub. Ive tried a set from car spares and a set from Ford, i was told they are all the same. I through the old arms away, I didn't check the ball joint size as i didn't think the diameter would be different. The only reason i changed them was because the rubber bushes had split but there was no play before.

Please help as its driving me mad now lol
