I met an experienced mechanic last night who gave me the sensible answer that nobody else has been able to give me about why I shouldn't convert a PAS rack to manual: I'll probably break it.

Apparently the PAS rack is not designed to take much force from the wheel. Can you imagine if I broke a rack at high speed on the track? Hmmm. Dangerous.

Or maybe I should just go back to PAS.
