Ultimately you need to be contented and have no "unresolved" emotional issues when you go to bed. If its trauma related then you need to get your head round the trauma which aint easy as youll always be slightly mentally scarred by what you see/experience.

A way that can work with nightmares is "sleep planning". Before you go to bed you plan in your mind what to do if you have a nightmare and that the nightmare isnt real just in your head. All the usual reading before bed can work too.

Didnt work for me either as I'd taken to slashing my arms up with a knife by then and that works quite well, but has its obvious negative points
