Happened to my parents last year - called insurance explained what happened, the insurance send out forms to fill in, you list prices of everything you lost & an assesor comes round to have a look & asks to see damaged goods etc & if they agree that its all cool and not fraud etc they just pay out, was quite straight forward really and they didnt quibble on the prices of anything.

They'll ask you to use their approved decorator etc but you can choose who does it - as my dads a builder etc he done it all himself rather than getting in some cowboys the insurance would use. My parents needed a new ceiling, all walls re-plastered the lot.
