how does titanium cope ive got a large ish stash i could have a go at machining up.
AFAIK titanium is not much good as a bearing surface as it picks up very easily
If you are only using the new material to make the little end smaller you are not taking away any strength from the rod (the 3mm bit made me think you were opening the rods out

)
Aluminium bronze is another alternative ?
