Rev count is giving a false reading on higher rpm... Been told this takes its signal from the coil, I have use of a couple of coils so its worth a try, 1 to fix the rev count, 2 to raise the rev limit from 5000rpm...
Eva way, 5000rpm aint the end of the world, I just like things to be right...
I fitted the cambelt last weekend, its timed up perfect, it was doing this before hand... so another possible cause illiminated

Im telling you to get the basic settings reset. Im telling you because years ago I had the same problem

(I was an aprrentice FFS LOL) Id fitted a cambelt to a 3a Passat 2.0 8v. (same engine) It ran fine but wouldnt rev up past 5K or so. Assuming the Valve timing is OK. Get the ignition timing set spot on (6 degrees +/-1 IIRC) then get the equipment to teach the ECU the "New" settings.
All the other faults tend to be of the wont start variety. so Relays and coils and even crank position sender. ECU isnt unknkown to fail in a bizarre way, but this isnt likely.
