tbh nothing is clean cut. All insurance companies are different....but in general its taken into consideration that driving to a pre-booked manditory mot test with no current certificate is acceptable as its a requirement. If in doubt, phone your insurance provider....you pay them many beer tokens each year so you have the right to ask.
As far as I was aware with regards distance...i took it always to be 'with in a reasonable distance'.
