does it matter if you use the optical output?

i've got mine running from optical to optical sky to amp and the sounds is cracking (although the skyhd sound is a lot lower volume than normal sky+ (around 25% quieter)

is it supposed to be like this/

all the sound is carried via the hdmi cable to the telly and via optic cable to the amp
