that would be my guess, i had one that used to make a grinding noise when i turned the wheel, one of those annoying noises, must have been dry for a while and somehow started to wear a grove into the back of the steering wheel, used some silicone grease and its been spot on since. this was on a subaru justy btw but i can only assume escorts will be the same idea
