cheers for the replies, i would like to just like to be able to take good quality photos of my kids when i take them out, take good pictures at the car shows i go to, nothing really exciting, but i would think once i start to take good pictures i would start getting more in to it,
I think you'll be better off with a decent compact camera.. because you need a long zoom lens to do photos of cars on tracks, but a completely different lens for taking pics of your kids at home..
However, a really good compromise is a Nikon D40 and a Nikkor 18-200 VR lens.. but that little package is knocking on £800
