You boys are making hard work out of this. I just put the 'box into third (once you get under there and put it in neutral and turn your brain on, it's not that hard to work out where third is), then put the shifter linkage on and tighten it, but still allowing it to be moved. Then jump in the car and move the gearstick to roughly where you think third should be, then tighten the linkage. Try it out, see what it feels like, then tweek from there as required.
why bother guessing an tweeking though when ford have put a purpose made hole to lock the gearstick in fourth?????
