Default Custom exhaust line for escort 1.6 CVH

Hello, recently my exhaust line is at no very good state, and I want to renew it.
I plan to make a custom line, with a pair of silencers but with more diameter on the line.
My engine is a 1.6 CVH with newman cams phase1 DFT 32/34 carb and slightly work in the head.
In a month or two I will mount twin 40 webers, and maybe will go for a 2 litre full zetec conversion.
Is 50 milimeter (2 inch) diameter good for this engine? I can mount that diameter or maximum I can put in 55mm (2 1/8 aprox inch). But my mechanic says that is too big for this engine and that I will lose some low torque.
What do you recommend 50 or 55? Another thing is when I`ll go to zetec can use that same exhaust line.
