If that was true all it would take would be to sell it to someone without a reciept (ie most private sales), and you can claim it back.

Well thats it. Thats why 99% of the population use the V5 as proof of ownership. It states on the form that it does not prove ownership.
BUt in court the V5 does not prove ownership. But like you say, try proving you haven't sold it when someone else has the V5....
