Basically having received a letter off them today telling me my subscription is going up "£2 as of August to £40 (sports package) i rung them up to tell them i wasnt very happy and was considering cancelling

They said that due to how long i'd been with them they would do me a free install and supply of Sky plus with no hidden charges......great i thought! But then they said as i dont have a phone line that i would need to pay £25 to have the system configured somehow which would mean an additional cable of some sort on the install? is this right?????
I basically said that surely the £25 can be waived seeing as they have had 13 years of loyalty from me on high end packages,to which i got nowhere despite being stern but polite, and when i asked him why a normal sky digital package of Sports was £40 but sky talk, broadband and a top subscription is only £25 per month he couldnt answer why i pay more for less..
Just need to know if theyre right about having to somehow configure the system because i dont have a landline.
thanks
Mart

Hi mate. Worked for Sky for 9 years, so here's your answers
Part of the terms and conditions of the Sky contract is that you have the box connected to a phone line for the first 12 months (or when you take a new system, hence beginning a new 12 month contract). This is because your box is given to you at a subsidised price (or free). The subsidy is paid for by some other company that has something to do with the interactive stuff you can use on your box if you have the phone line connected.
If you don't have a landline, you can't qualify for the subsidy. It used to be the case until recently, that you couldn't have sky installed without a landline at all (although I'm sure some folk wangled it)
In regards to your package, the price change always occurs at this time of year. Sometimes it won't affect the package your on, sometimes it will, but the £25 package you are on about won't include one of the top viewing packages. It may have one of the sports, or one of the movies, but then it may also have hardly any of the basic channels.
If you check the website, you can see exactly what package you have, and then compare it to their combination mixes. I'm sure you'll be on one of the top viewing packages compared to what you would get for £25.

That's not right I'm afraid dude. You can do a software download to any of the sky boxes (normal, sky+ or HD) without a phone line, the noise you hear is the fan starting up to cool the box down. It does it perioducally through the day as well, not just at night.
