silly mistake mate but easily done (by myself aswell ) mine dropped straight through this hole you talk about on a 2wd and into the sump,on a 2wd the surface is smooth and fell into the oil pan. on a 4wd there are places it would get trapped before reaching the oil pan.
trouble is a magnetic pick up pen sticks to everything metal inside.
I think your quickest solution is to have the sump off mate.
