Breakfast is really important when losing weight. If you have had a good healthy breakfast, you feel like you've set yourself up for the day and carry on the good work.
Depriving your body of food for long periods of time, ie from the time you go to bed until mid morning/lunch time the next day is not ideal... your brain realises the lack of food intake, and because it doesn't know when the next meal is coming, puts your body into fat storing mode..... don't ask me how it all works, it just does.
If your body is used to regular food, the fat storing doesn't kick in and the body can break down the fats quicker, thus your weight loss.
