the compressor outlet is the first part of the induction system that sees compressed air so I imagine its the same as the downpipe of the exhaust is the first part of the exhaust to see the pressure going into it.

It gives the air/gas a chance to settle and start to flow.

This might all be bull but its how I understand it.
