Problem solved, well big problem solved so far. The bad running and irractic revving was due to a pipe that had popped off at the rear of the engine and was leaking air.

managed to open her up a little on the way home and she still misfire's under load, so ordering a new coilpack and fingers crossed that'll sort it.
