the amal valve is usually fitted to the top of the intercooler (if still standard cooler fitted) if it has been removed there will be a bleed valve in its place which will be somewhere in the vacume pipe coming from the actuator, before you try changing the amal valve try a new actuator first as when the spring inside them go weak they are unable to hold the boost which gives the situation you described above.
