Tell that to my great uncle who fought at arnham and lost nearly all of his colleagues who went in with him, IIRC it was 1200 of them went in and 200 of them came back out, having seen close quarters fighting on most days and been under continual fire from snipers/mortars etc during the whole period.
No such thing as a safe war, but the modern ones are a lot better for our boys than WW2 was.
WW1 was just a total fuckup of mismanagement and most of the soldiers who died never actually got to fight anyone, they were just pointlessly slaughtered in trench warfare without even even seeing an enemy troop up close much less having the chance to fight them
