But then if the person im overtaking decides to even slightly accellerate by 2 mph, which seems to happen 90% of the time, then that brings a halt to the manouver.

I can totally sympathise with you there. My Escort 55 1.8D van i believe left the factory with 59bhp, i run it empty virtually all the time and even then it is unbelievably slow

Going up hills is a complete nightmare, if there is even a slight hill, i'm down to 65 on the dualer and if it gets a bit steeper yet i can be down to 55, it's mad! It's the first motor i think i have had that i have to actually spend half an hour assessing how i am going to overtake this car doing 1mph less than me and as you said, if they increase their speed by 1mph i'm fucked
The last time i was on a dual carriageway journey, my foot was welded to the floor the whole way, 40 miles or so. At one point a woman in her MX5 was in the right lane away to overtake me (now please remember i said my foot was literally on the floor) i was doing about 65 up a slight hill. She was creeping up behind me so slowly but making progress. Although the hill i was climbing gradually started to level out, so seeing as my foot was on the floor, the van started creeping up the speed and alas DOWNHILL appeared, the MX5 was next to me at this point and i then gradually accelerated up to about 85mph (solely with gravity's help!) before she eventually put the foot down and passed me
Now i imagine she probably thought i was being a total cunt not wanting to let her pass but my van drives itself ha ha. Slow uphill and less slow downhill

I do find it funny but it can be frustrating at times
