Default Restoring Faded Metallic

I'm assuming this cant be done?

On my spoiler I used a stanley-bladed window scraper to remove all the lacquer then wet sanded with 1500 paper mixed with tcut.
This worked wonders.
However, lacquer removal in this case was easy as it was pealed and cracked.

Now, would it be possible to rub through the lacquer on a metallic car and then wet sand the paint as you normally would with a non-clearcoat finish?
Obv re-lacquering after.
I'm guessing it'd be difficult to remove the lacquer without going too far and damaging the paint. But, has anyone been mad enough to try this?

Mainly thinking outloud but I know there are some die-hard painter types around so you never know.
