When its cold makes more sense to me, if its hot how can you judge how much oil has still not made its way back to the sump? its no better than guessing

Also as said above, whats to stop you massively over filling it? if you measure when hot and its showing nothing on the stick and you throw 2 litres in, when its cold it will be way over surely ?
